1) ABORTED:
Global Flatline
This album came out last January, but manages to retain the top spot
all year long due to tremendous song writing and crazy drumming. The
song 'The Origin of Disease' is still probably my favorite song of the
year, it's what death metal is all about.

2) CRYPTOPSY:
Cryptopsy
So glad to have these guys back and Jon back in the band, this album is
just spectacularly written from beginning to end.
|
|
3) BENEATH
THE MASSACRE: Incongruous
The incredible speed and brutality of this album keeps me coming back
again and again. Simple, but elegant.
|
|
4) GLASS
CLOUD: The Royal Thousand
I really dig the riffs on this one, nice and experimental in all the
right ways.
|
|
5) SPAWN
OF POSSESSION: Incurso
Best technical death metal of the year, the songs are complex,
everytime I listen to this I hear something new and interesting.
|
|
6) NILE:
At The Gate Of Sethu
Another great album, would have a higher spot but this was a
particularly good year for metal, and it's tough to outdo the
perfection this band has hit so many years in a row.
|
|
7) PERIPHERY:
Periphery II
Not as good as their first album, but Misha had a lifetime to get ready
for that one. Certainly not bad for a second album, more musical and
experimental in a lot of ways. |
|
8) MESHUGGAH:
Koloss
Mixing their earlier riff based work with their more droning recent
work, these guys pack the largest hammer in the business.
|
|
9) THE
FACELESS: Autotheism
Not as good as their second album, but I appreciate their decision to
go extra conceptual and to incorporate more odd chord progressions.
Maybe next time they'll bring a little more of the speed back. |
|
10) ARKAIK:
Metamorphignition
Really spectacular riffs, this was the surprise album of the year, was
expecting something good but got something great instead. Best
technical death metal next to Spawn.
